Brutalism
Geisel Library
Location: La Jolla, California
Year built: 1970
Architects: William L. Pereira & Associates
The aggressive, large, blocky, and rigid style emerged in the 1950s. They are blocky geometric and made oftentimes mostly out of concrete. I find myself drawn to this style, it's plain but complex, it's intriguing but stand-offish. In my eyes, it gives off the feeling of power and aggression but to my surprise, this building is a library. I have included three images of the library to show how beautiful it is and the different ways it looks throughout the day. The building is named after local La Jolla author and benefactor Theodor Seuss Geisel. This building is home to a large collection of Dr. Seuss's drawings, books, audio recordings, and memorabilia. There are over 8,500 items and is also home to a large bronze statue of the Cat in the Hat that welcomes all visitors. I would love to visit this incredible building and see the outside and inside as well as the full collection.
